Mt. Hood

...a Touchstone for the Creative

Douglas firs creaking in the wind, small bird songs moving through the forst, walking trails along clear, cold streams...seasonal changes in weather that brace the senses...all this and more is a source of inspiration for a number of creative people who call The Villages of Mt. Hood home.

We introduce to two such artists: potter Dulcie Lindsoe of Lindsoe Claywork and printmaker Sue Allen of Studio Ink. Of special note, Dulcie will open her studio this September 2nd and 3rd. You'll gain fresh perspectives of the pottery and the artist in the intimacy of her creative space. You can meet Sue at her booth in the Wild About Art section at the upcoming Mt. Hood Festival of the Forest, September 16-17, 2006 at Wildwood Recreation Area in Welches.

Take time to connect with these artists and their work when you visit the The Villages of Mt. Hood. We know you will be enriched by the encounter.

LINDSOE CLAYWORKS

Dulcie-Lindsoe Johansen of Lindsoe Clayworks is a prolific artist, creating functional stoneware containers and unique sculptures for home and garden. She produces from her studio in Welches and has been selling her work throughout the Pacific NW since 1980 including Skamania Lodge, Timberline Lodge and Made In Oregon stores.

Dulcie begins work early in the day. Her process is a continuous cycle which generally starts with a fresh ball of clay thrown on the wheel. The pieces accumulate, drying quietly on their shelves until they receive an 8 hour bisque firing. Later, Dulcie adds personality with soft, air-brushed designs over durable glazes and completes the cycle with a final 8 hour glaze firing. Many of the pieces are decorated with natural imagery, some of which are influenced by her natural environment in the mountains.

She also enjoys hand-building sculptures, including whimsical dog portraits (pictured). Currently Riley the labrador is her top dog model.

Dulcie also welcomes custom work. She can place logos or designs on mugs, or create one-of-a-kind trophy's for golf tournaments and ski races. She also makes custom pieces such as deep-dish plates and color coordinated mixing bowls or complete dish sets.

She is a member of the Wy'east Artisans Guild and the Oregon Potters' Association (which has the nation's largest all-ceramic "Showcase" each May at the convention center in Portland). She is also a member of the Larch Mountain Country Artisans (which has an annual show at Glen Otto Park, Troutdale November 17-19).

Give Dulcie a call she'll be glad to talk with you, or come to her Clayworks studio sale September 2nd & 3rd from 10 to 5pm. Follow the signs off the highway in Welches or come to 69177 Barlow Trail Road, Welches, OR 97067 or call 503-622-4376 for directions or to view her work, visit: www.lindsoeclayworks.com

SUE ALLEN OF STUDIO INK

Artist SUE ALLEN has lived in Brightwood for nearly 25 years. Her work is carried locally at the Wy'east Book Shoppe and Art Gallery and the Mount Hood Information Center, both in the Welches area, as well as Three Sisters Coffee and the Mount Hood Cultural Center and
 Museum in Government Camp.

Her main mediums are screenprinting and book arts, though she has a Bachelor of Architecture degree from The Cooper Union in New York City. She loves the Mt. Hood area and often draws inspiration from it. Earlier this year she was awarded a grant from the Clackamas County
Cultural Coalition and the Oregon Cultural Trust, for her project- "Around Mt. Hood: 12 Months - 12 Directions."

This series of 12 original limited-edition screenprints (2 are shown here) will depict views of the mountain from different directions in different months. Gathering ideas and information within the last year has included drives, hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing; often bringing friends along on her research adventure. Six of the prints are completed, with six to go. An inaugural exhibition is planned beginning mid November at the Mt. Hood Cultural Center and Museum in Government Camp.

She participates in many shows and exhibitions yearly, and will have a booth at the upcoming Mt. Hood Festival of the Forest in September, in Wildwood Park. She is an active member of the Wy'east Artisans Guild, originally a mountain group now meeting in Sandy. This years' theme show "Wings" is now on exhibit at the Hoodland Library in Welches.

Sue currently works part time for the Arts Action Alliance of Clackamas County as their Exhibit Coordinator, hanging exhibits in public spaces around the county. Contact Sue at
www.sueallenstudio.com or by phone at 503-622-3611.
