Mt. Hood History

Wooden Skis
Will Take You There

Two good books on the history of Mt. Hood

With excitement building for the upcoming Mt. Hood ski season, it's time to fantasize about replacing worn-out coats and ski equipment. What better way to fully appreciate modern convention than to read about the real-life stories of those who braved the slopes before ski lifts, hi-tech gear and insulation.

Here are two books on the history of Mt. Hood that will help you go back in time to gain an even greater appreciation for our rugged mountain and the people who blazed the trails.

Timberline and a Century of Skiing on Mount Hood
by Jean Arthur

Since 1890 courageous skiers have ventured onto the slopes of Oregon's Mount Hood. Jean Arthur tells the stories of these early pioneers and of the men and women who developed recreational and professional skiing at Timberline Lodge and Ski Area on Mount Hood's south side.

(Page 6): Hank Lewis of Portland recalled the late 1920s and early 1930s: "To show you how good we were at skiing in those days, it took us longer to ski down from timberline than to walk up. Nobody knew how to ski."

(Page 9): Hjalmar Hvam broke his leg while jumping a cornice in 1937. He developed his releasable ski binding in 1939. Years later he said, "To live and not ski is a sad life. To ski and be afraid is still worth it. But to ski and have no fear--this is to be alive!" A photo on p. 7 depicts Hvam, John Elvrum, and four other ski jumpers in the 1930s at Ski Bowl.

Richly illustrated with black-and-white photographs and illustrations, this history captures the visionary spirit of those who built Timberline into one of North America's finest skiing destinations.
