Get Your Soup On

The Soup Spoon

Warm hospitality to one and all

Tucked away in the heart of Welches, The Soup Spoon is a favorite place for many customers who make a point to stop in when they are on the mountain.  Have lunch and you’ll know why!

The Soup Spoon’s owner, chef Debbie Knudsen’s love of cooking is equal to her love of people. She says “you only get to be a stranger once!”

When you enter The Soup Spoon, you are warmly welcomed by Debbie from her busy kitchen, the open centerpiece to her cafe.  While pouring her signature soups, making fresh sandwiches, or serving up generous pie wedges, Debbie delivers her special style of hospitality to one and all.  Typically, there is lively conversation about food, family and current news, and it delights her when a customer says “This is just like coming home to my aunt’s kitchen!”

The Soup Spoon’s fare includes soups year around—heartier hot soup, stew, or chili in the cooler months and lighter cool soup in the warmer months. Customers are given generous samples of each of the three soups of the day from which they can select a cup or bowl of their choice. (Debbie at work: Left)

Many customers find the soups completely satisfying, and for those who want more for their lunch, there are always several sandwiches to choose from as well as a "sandwich-of-the-day." In the cooler months, there are fresh-baked muffins or cornbread.

Debbie travels to Hood River regularly to pick through the fall harvests of pears and apples for her desserts. During this time of year, competition for a piece of her pear pie is fierce. Word to the wise... saavy customers have found Debbie has a soft spot in her heart for saving a pie for them if they call ahead! And don't worry, chocolate lovers, there is usually a good brownie or other chocolate-laden dessert just for you.

Local beer and wine is offered. Take out service is available.  If you need take out for six or more, Debbie asks for you to call a day ahead.  While Debbie doesn’t offer full catering services, she does take orders for pies or soups for those who need a last-minute potluck dish or for survival while a kitchen is being remodeled.

Since opening her restaurant just under 8 years ago, she has taken great joy in establishing a business that fits her love of picking fresh produce and food product personally each week and following her whim when she chooses to try a new homemade soup, stew, sandwich or dessert recipe. If you are looking for a genuinely comfortable, home kitchen ambience with fragrant, delectable lunch fare, then this is the café for you.
