Knit It On The Mountain

New Knitting Store Opens in Zigzag

This is a “fiber fever alert” for all knitters, felters, crocheters, spinners and weavers.

We invite you to indulge yourself at "Cast One On." Look for fabulous knitted examples (some for sale), books and patterns. as well as knitting tools, and locally-made needle cases to keep your needles together and sorted. But it is the inventory of yarns that inspires and sparks the imagination. There is color everywhere, artfully grouped in combinations that bring out a new “Oh!” at every shelf in endless textures, from fluffy and fat to ultra fine.

The shop carries primarily natural fibers -- such as a variety of wools/wool blends (e.g., fine merino wool, soft alpaca, sturdy and warm Icelandic wools), cottons and other fiber blends. Some skeins are built to endure endless washings (for children and babies) and others are especially durable for high-wear items (socks and mittens). You'll find skeins that are spun locally as well as labeled yarns such as Gail Walker and Annie.

Shop owner Kara Verdoorn, has lived on the mountain for about seven years. Her passion for knitting first began with a class (from local fiber artist Gail Walker of In Sheep’s Clothing) and two months ago she opened Cast One On in Zigzag.

Cast One On carries a line of roving—most often skeins of unspun wool fibers or blends that allow spinners to by-pass some of the more time-consuming tasks of preparing fleece for spinning (like washing, teasing, carding, rolling.) Kara notes that some of her customers find the roving great for knitting or crochet projects that can be felted (a matting of wool fibers that creates more of a “fabric” effect.)

Kara's joy in working with fiber is growing. She aspires to learn spinning and will soon be an Ashford spinning wheel dealer. Ashford wheels, originating in Australia--a world center for sheep and wool, are acknowledged workhorse wheels that can be tuned by spinners to produce everything from low twist, high loft bulky yarns to high twist, fine yarns.

Kara is planning to host classes or stichery gatherings. She recommends bookmarking her Web site for pictures of projects, products and upcoming events. http://www.castoneon.com
