SCRAP OF HISTORY

Keeping Oregon's Story Alive

Stage Stop Road Interpretive Center

Here is a mini museum and interpretive center about the Oregon Trail that is worth exploring, it's even better after a hearty bowl of soup, sandwich or wedge of pie at The Soup Spoon next door (see article).

The center was established by the Cascade Geographic Society to illustrate aspects of the Oregon Trail section on Mt. Hood.   There are many photos, personal items, implements, and map panels that help create viewers’ understanding of the trail and the experiences of immigrants who chose to traverse it.  There are drawings and samples of interpretive writing that helps keep the story alive, even after 150 plus years.

Another section of the center focuses on the history of those who chose to settle locally along the valley of the Salmon and Sandy rivers.  Photos and artifacts help broaden understanding of the life-style in early Oregon history in the region.  Some of these settlements still exist today in regional locals like Brightwood, Welches, Wemme, Zigzag, Rhododendron.

Group tours of at lease one section and a museum shop are by appointment.  The gift shop features Oregon Trail imaged or related items such as huckleberry or mushroom products, postcards and notecards, walking sticks, maps, caps, totes, and more.

LOCATION: The Stage Stop Road Interpretive Center is located at 24525 East Stage Stop Road, approximately a quarter a mile south of the stop light at Highway 26 and Welches Road, Welches.
