Cut Your Own
Christmas Tree

Why not add an old-fashioned tradition to your Christmas celebration this year. Take to the woods and cut your own Christmas tree. There is nothing so exhilarating as inhaling the evergreen fragrances and cold mountain air while you choose just the right tree for your home.

Here's how!

The Mt Hood National Forest sells personal use Christmas tree cutting permits through December 17th. Permits sell for $5.00 each. You can cut a tree up to 12 feet tall, and there is a limit of five tree permits per household. An information sheet will be provided so you know where to go and what to do. Christmas tree tags may be purchased with cash or check only.

Winter weather in the forest can change rapidly. Forest Service roads are not plowed. Be advised of winter road closures and snow park permit requirements. Be prepared for rain, snow and icy conditions. Bring extra food and clothing. We recommend you start early in the day and be out of the forest before dark. Carry a tool to cut your tree, a shovel and tire chains. Tell a friend or family member where you are going and when you plan to return.

You can purchase your permit and get more information at all of the Mt. Hood National Forest offices. Forest Rangers will be happy to direct you to the area that most fits your needs.
