MT HOOD DINING

Mt Hood Picnics

You’ve planned the perfect road trip to Mt Hood along the Oregon Scenic Byway, complete with stops for hiking, biking and enjoying the scenery. The only thing left is where to eat. For this trip, why not skip the reservations and let your outdoor adventures include the freedom of a picnic.

Picnics don’t necessarily have to involve recipes, cooking and packing. In the Villages of Mt Hood, you’ll find endless options for quick, convenient, tasty meals that are easy to take along on any journey.

An early hike up to Little Zig Zag Falls can be a treat when the sun is shining over the wildflowers, but don’t let grumbling stomachs disrupt the peaceful nature of the forest! Mt Hood Roasters offers a variety of wholesome breakfast options that will keep you on the move all morning long.

If you’re looking for something healthy and easy for the whole family, stop in Welches. Try sandwiches at Subway or the popular, locally owned Soup Spoon, which offers 3 varieties of homemade soup daily. Subway has a pre-order form available so your food can be ready when you arrive. Hop back in the car and head down the road to Wildwood Park where you can spend the afternoon playing ball in the fields, swinging in the park, and wading in the nearby Salmon River. The park also offers covered areas and barbeque stations if you’re craving hot dogs and hamburgers.

Thriftway and Mt Hood Foods have all the fixings you need for a barbeque in the park. You can find a variety of beverages and snacks to complete the meal and coolers to keep it chilled. The grocery stores also sell the greatest necessity of camping: graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate bars to make s’mores.

A popular camping spot is the Tollgate Campground. This is the site of one of Sam Barlow’s original tollgates on the last leg of the Oregon Trail. There is also great trout fishing at the Zig Zag River that runs along the campground. That cooler will definitely come in handy if you happen to catch something.

For a romantic afternoon, try a walk along the Salmon River Trail followed by a picnic on the riverbank. Some gourmet appetizers to go from the Rendezvous or the Tartans would make the perfect picnic food. Throw in a bottle of wine and a delicious dessert and you have an intimate meal in a breathtaking outdoor setting amongst the old growth Douglas Fir trees.

There are as many food options as there are outdoor adventures in the Mt Hood Area. Take the time to enjoy nature as you dine in the great outdoors.
