CAMPING MT HOOD

Resting Under the Stars

Camping at Mt Hood National Forest

For your stay at Mt. Hood, why not enjoy the true beauty of the outdoors and Oregon’s wilderness by taking the rugged approach and camping in a tent or out under the stars. The areas surrounding Mt. Hood offer unlimited camping spots, most near rivers or lakes, surrounded by hiking trails, and in close proximity to activities around the area.

There are numerous campgrounds around Mt. Hood that are maintained by the Zigzag Ranger Station. The Camp Creek campground is just three miles up from Rhododendron, sitting at an elevation of 2200 feet. Nestled in the forest, this campground is full of opportunities for hiking, fishing and bird watching.

Tollgate Campground not only rests among tall trees, it was a landmark on the old Barlow Trail, the last leg of the Oregon Trail. A replica of one of Samuel Barlow’s original tollgates sits just east of the campground. The tollgate at this point operated from 1879-1915. This campground sits on the north bank of the Zigzag River and is just a few miles east of Rhododendron.

Trillium Lake is another popular camping spot, just past Government Camp. This lakeside campground has a beautiful view of Mt. Hood, along with exciting recreational activities. Boating, fishing and swimming are excellent summer activities and the campground is just moments from year-round skiing and the historic Timberline Lodge. There is also a trail that winds around the entire lake, great for an evening walk under the stars.

If you’re more interested in roughing it the easy way, try staying at Mt. Hood Village RV Resort, located just 40 miles east of Portland. The village is surrounded by 114 acres of lush forest and has easy access to the Salmon River, great for fishing, hiking and picnicking. You will still be surrounded by forest, but you have your choice of staying in a cabin, cabin suite, or cottage, or you can bring your RV with the option of full hookups. Other amenities at the luxury RV park include Wildwood Café, open 7 days a week for breakfast and lunch, a convenience store and fitness center with an indoor pool, hot tub and two work-out rooms.  Activities in the area include golf, tennis, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, skiing, and mountain climbing.
