Summertime Dining in the Villages of Mt Hood
It seems like summer is made for burgers and fries. But if you just don’t feel like cooking yourself, check out the many local restaurants that offer an excellent variety of burgers and milkshakes.
An easy spot to stop is Dairy Queen located in Rhododendron. This locally owned Dairy Queen has a variety of burgers on the menu, including cheeseburgers, bacon cheddar burgers and mushroom Swiss burgers. The restaurant offers lots of ice cream treats, with milkshakes and malts being a favorite. The shakes, a combination of soft serve and milk, come in a variety of flavors, including vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. Or try something more decadent by having them mix in your favorite candy or cookie.
Just down the road from Dairy Queen is the Skyway Bar and Grill. The Skyway reopened at the end of July with a variety of barbequed food to offer guests. The family-owned restaurant will be making their own hamburgers, with everything homemade down to the fries and the mayonnaise. Chef Jason Homor, a seventh generation Texan, will be smoking ribs, burgers, chicken and more delectables all summer long.
The most popular place for a milkshake is The Huckleberry Inn located in Government Camp. The restaurant offers flavors from the traditional vanilla and chocolate shakes to its specialty, the Huckleberry shake. Vanilla ice cream and fresh huckleberries picked from around Mt. Hood make this shake world-famous. In addition to shakes, Huck’s offers different burgers, including the Big Man Sandwich. This ½ pound burger comes with all the fixings. Shakes and burgers can be ordered 24-hours a day at this local hot spot.
The Still Creek Inn in Rhododendron offers a variety of Northwest-style meals. The restaurant may get fancy for the dinner menu including Friday & Saturday nights in the summer when they specialize Swiss-themed meals, but they still offer an excellent burger. Try the Angus mushroom Swiss burger. The Still Creek Inn has the best fries on the mountain, always made fresh. In a prime location In Rhododendron, it’s impossible to pass up.
The Territory Restaurant & Lounge, Zig Zag Inn and The Shack Restaurant & Sports Bar are local favorites for any occasion. Hamburgers are always a favorite at these spots, and they come with a variety of fixings. The Shack is fun for dinner, as live music or karaoke is often featured.
For a gourmet vegetarian alternative, try the Black Bean Burger at The Rendezvous Grill. It is served up with avocado, a red pepper remoulade and melted sharp cheddar cheese.
