Shady paths for forest strolls, broad green lawns for picnics, and best of all, hungry fish waiting to bite: you’ll find all this at the Rainbow Trout Farm. On Sylvan Road in the Alder Creek area, owners Mike and Marti Kaiser oversee 30 beautifully landscaped acres complete with ten ponds kept stocked with trout. They have fishing gear and bait ready to go. All you have to do is throw your line and catch your fish. It’s a perfect way to show young ones the joy of fly-fishing, or to get away on your own for a successful bite or two. Clean your catch yourself at the sinks provided, or bring your bucketful to a staff member and ask them to do it for you. If you’re in a cooking mood, find one of the handy barbeques onsite and grill your trout. Meanwhile, don’t be surprised if a number of large, friendly crows hang around in the trees and check out your picnic basket.
Got a whole party with you? There’s plenty of lawn for spreading out. Want to throw a party? There’s a gracious cedar and brick Hospitality Room available for event reservations. Small waterfalls and pools provide inviting places to sit in contemplation, while play structures are provided for kids and anyone else who can’t resist some climbing fun. Rainbow Trout Farm’s been around since 1932. Since taking ownership in 1982 the Kaisers have made a lovely escape from the rest of the busy world, where you can enjoy some mountain peace and relaxation, and the satisfaction of catching your own dinner.
For fly-fishing on the wild side, try Alder Creek for trout or the Sandy or Salmon Rivers for steelhead and salmon. The demolition of the Marmot Dam on the Sandy River, which took place on July 24th of this year, means that the rivers will once again be free flowing this fall. Salmon and steelhead will start appearing in greater numbers in the rivers of the Villages of Mt Hood in the next few years. Come take a look at the beginning of this historic renewal!
