Warm Cabins in the Woods
for the Holidays
When you picture a traditional family Christmas, what do you see? You probably see snow, a tree hung with ornaments, and a table spread with feasts. For many people, that picture also includes a log cabin.
Log cabins symbolize for many people the best of American family living. They remind us of the hard work and close relationships it took to build shelter in frontier times not so long ago. Their solid craftsmanship reflects the strength and pride we find in each other. Throw in snow, a blazing hearth, and a season of giving, and a log cabin becomes the perfect place for holiday warmth and togetherness.
Those pioneer families decorated their cabins for the holidays from what came easily to hand. Evergreen boughs woven into swags or wreaths were as simple and lovely then as now, as were tree cones either plain or with a little gilded paint. Popcorn and cranberry strings were easy to make, and gave a special American touch to Christmas, as neither corn nor cranberries were found in Europe. Paper cutouts, snowflakes, and chains have always been a good craft for children and delightful to hang on the tree.
It’s impossible to resist going out for a snowshoe trek or some skiing, and maybe tossing a few snowballs. When everyone comes back inside they’ll be ready to enjoy some warm drinks and indoor games. Hot cocoa is always delicious, but for the grownups, here’s a traditional German holiday beverage:
Gluh Wein (Mulled Wine)
1 bottle red wine
1 cinnamon stick
6 lumps sugar
(In a cheesecloth bag place the following:)
3 strips orange peel
3 whole cloves
3 strips lemon peel
Mix these ingredients all together.
Heat in a saucepan but do not boil.
Strain into a pitcher.
Board games are a great way to have fun after a day’s snowy adventure. There’s a game for everyone, whether you like tic tac toe and checkers, chess, Monopoly, Pictionary, or any number of excellent games. For the very smallest in your holiday cabin, try these riddles!
What kind of bird can write? A pen-guin.
What did the Gingerbread Man put on his bed? A cookie sheet.
What do elves learn in school? The elf-abet.
