Forest Road 1825 has Reopened
Forest Road 1825 has reopened after being flooded out during last November’s floods which washed away the bridge approach leaving a 35 foot gap. The temporary fix, funded by the Federal Highway Administration, now provides access to people who want to pick mushrooms, hike on the Sandy River Trail or cross country ski and snowshoe this winter.
Since the temporary bridge is only one lane with approach ramps, vehicles must stop and yield to oncoming traffic on the bridge.
As always, the public is asked to practice safe behavior while visiting their Mt. Hood National Forest. Hikers on the Sandy River Trail and the Ramona Falls Trail are advised to stay away from thirty foot high cliffs resulting from last November’s scouring by the Sandy River. The soil in the vicinity of these cliffs is loose unstable sand. Segments of trail were also damaged or obliterated and will be relocated in the future.
The temporary hiking foot-bridge across the Sandy River on the Ramona Falls Trail is also currently not in place as is customary this time of year in preparation for expected high winter run-off. Hikers trying to access Ramona Falls or the Pacific Crest Trail in the Sandy River area should use caution while fording the river. If the river is high, fording should not be attempted. More river safety crossing tips are available at on the Forest Web site at http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/mthood/recreation/trails/index.shtml The reopened bridge also provides access to the McNeil, Riley, and Lost Creek campgrounds which only operate during the summer months.
