Mountain Cabin
Tips for Choosing the Perfect Cabin for
Ski Groups and Getaways in the Villages of Mt Hood
Staying in a cabin in the woods can be a great way to spend a family vacation, romantic rendezvous or relaxing getaway. Mount Hood cabins are often surrounded by captivating natural views such as forested areas or streams which brings the mountain's natural beauty right to your doorstep.
From casually rustic to very elegant, Mt. Hood cabins are a worth experiencing. For preliminary research, you can call Mt. Hood Information Center, 503-622-3017 or browse the websites listed below.
Mt. Hood is more and more well-known for its diverse lodging cabins. They are available in a variety of styles, with many different amenities and settings. To find a perfect fit for your needs, take a few moments to consider these questions.
What is your Favorite Location?
Would you like a cabin near a river, golf course, skiing or shopping? Would you like a room with a view? Should your cabin be secluded or would you prefer to be in a mountain neighborhood?
How close is the cabin to activities and recreation, hiking, golf, fishing, restaurants, shops, etc?
You might want to ask about whether the cabin is located a gravel road or ask if there will be sidewalks or street lights.
How Flexible is Your Timeline & Budget?
If possible, you might want to jot down alternate dates before calling in your reservations. Also, keep a budget range to keep in mind as you learn a property's location, furnishing, amenities, etc.
How Private are the Cabin Accommodations?
Is the cabin a stand-alone home or will you share walls with other guests? How many bedrooms will you need and what type of sleeping arrangements do you prefer? Check to see if the cabin is equipped with real beds and of what size. This will help clarify which are sofa beds, futons or cots. Some cabins have plenty of bunkbeds which are perfect for large groups. Be sure to ask if the bedrooms have doors and walls for privacy and if there are lofts and sleeping areas.
Are linens provided for bed, bath and kitchen? Do they have maid services available if requested during a stay?
Is There a Wood Burning Fireplace?
How will you heat your cabin? If you hear "fireplace" or "woodstove," ask if there is also a furnace or other heating source. If there is a fireplace or woodstove, can you burn real firewood or just duraflame type of logs? Is the firewood provided?
How Much Kitchen Do You Need?
Does the cabin have a full kitchen that will suit your needs (insure it matches what you mean by "full" kitchen)? Or will you prefer a kitchenette? Be sure to ask about pots, pans and utensils. Will you need a dishwasher?
Can Fido Come Along?
Is the home pet-friendly (just dogs or all types of critters)? Or is it truly pet-free for those with allergies?
Hot Tubs & Other Concerns
If there is a hot tub, is it secluded, outdoors, shared with other people or is a jetted bathtub inside? How frequently is it maintained?
What about smoking versus non-smoking? Is it handicap accessible throughout? Do you need a covered parking area or structure? Do you need cancellation insurance or travel-related insurance? Can the host provide concierge services, if needed?
If you still have questions about the quality of furnishing, beds or cabin cleanliness after calling or researching online, cabin hosts can address these issues with you by phone or you can always arrange for a tour of the cabin prior to booking your reservation.
Please note that renting a cabin usually requires signing an agreement with the cabin's management person or group. You can usually read their agreement terms online so you can be prepared to get answers to any questions you may have about their agreement.
Hint: You may want to print this list out for future reference. There are many who discover cabin stays become their first choice for lodging needs. For more lodging in the Villages of Mt Hood, visit our Lodging section in this issue.
