Yoga & Massage in the Villages of Mt Hood

yoga mount hoodWould you like some pleasant exercise, but prefer to stay inside where it’s warm and dry?  It’s possible to gradually work up strength and flexibility for other activities, or perhaps you’re looking for something you can practice each day.  Yoga might be just the thing for you.

Yoga originated in India several thousand years ago, where its system of breathing practices, physical postures, and meditation were intended to integrate the practitioner's body, mind, and spirit.  Here in the West, yoga is also regarded simply as a beneficial form of physical exercise.  Almost every single person can learn and practice yoga.  It’s meant to be gentle to your body and relaxing for your outlook on things.  Imagine how you’ll feel after a good stretching session, all warmed up and watching the beautiful view outside!

Yoga Classes

oregon massageKaren Hangsterfer has been teaching yoga classes in Welches for 17 years and presently holds two evening classes in her massage and yoga space at 24403 E Welches Rd #102, in the building to the right of Welches’ post office.  She creates monthly themes based on the interests and practice levels of the group, blending hatha yoga, kundalini yoga, lots of breathing practices and varied meditation practices.

Space is limited — only 8 students per class — so she cannot receive drop-ins, but there is a waiting list for any space that becomes available.   She also has a few private students if you are looking for a specific focus in your yoga work.

Sue Allen is a local artist who has been studying and practicing yoga since 1970 and teaching on the mountain since 2003. She teaches a weekly class on Wednesdays from 9-10:15am:  “We gently cover: breathing, stretching, balance, strength, relaxation, stillness, and more. Come with with an empty stomach and clothes you can move in.”

Drop in for $10 a class, or prepay 3 classes per month for $25.  Classes are held in Karen Hangsterfer’s massage and yoga space.  Contact for upcoming classes.  She says there’s usually room for more!

Massage Therapy

Feel like taking a little more time on your body and healing relaxation? Karen Hangsterfer has 18 years of experience and over 600 hours of continuing education as a massage therapist, concentrating on clients who use bodywork as a vehicle to find deeper meaning and healing through their illnesses or chronic pains.  With her knowledge of therapies including Swedish, acupressure, and Intuitive Energy Work, she integrates various forms of massage depending on the needs of the client.  “Healing is multi-faceted and when the individual acknowledges their role in the imbalance a shifting takes place and healing is quickened,” she notes.   Karen offers reasonable rates of $60 per hour and $85 for an hour and a half.
