A Look at Local Artists
in the Villages of Mt Hood
Lindsoe Clayworks
Little did the bear digging into Dulcie Lindsoe-Johansen’s compost pile a while back know that he would reappear on stoneware mugs and bowls to delight people near and far. Dulcie chuckles as she recalls that example of how her home in The Villages of Mt Hood provides ideas for her art every day.
She’s been drawing inspiration from the area ever since she arrived from Virginia in May 1980, “one week before Mt. St. Helens blew,” she notes. At her Welches pottery studio, Lindsoe Clayworks, Dulcie creates useful and attractive objects decorated with scenes of the misty mountain forest in which she lives: deer, cabins, the mountain, pine cones, and, of course, bear. That’s how she shares the way of life she and her family have come to treasure.
Come See Dulcie’s Stoneware
For those who’d like to enjoy a little of Dulcie’s world in their own everyday life, they’ll find her work in a number of area shops and galleries. Recently, New Seasons Markets began offering a selection. Closer to home, you’ll find her stoneware at Made on Mt. Hood and at the Riverstone Gift Gallery at The Resort on the Mountain.
Meet Dulcie and see her creative space at her biannual studio open house during the weekend of August 1 – 2, 2009, from 10 – 5 both days. Dulcie will welcome you, and hopes you’ll also step off the highway and experience the full beauty of the area – the same beauty she loves to depict on clay to brighten each day for you.

Sue Allen Studio
From Studio Ink, her creative hub in Brightwood, Sue Allen transforms the flora, fauna and landscape of The Villages into bright screenprints. Each new season brings her fresh ideas and activities. For example, she’s about to start work on the North American Rock Garden Society’s quarterly journal covers for 2010. She plans to do views of Mt. Hood from each of three area shelters and one hut, and is having fun playing with the possibilities. She’s also recently been accepted into the Portland Art Museum’s Rental Sales Gallery, in a year that saw the most applicants to date. That doesn’t even scratch the surface of all the things she’s doing and places she’s going this year, but you can see them at her informative website, www.sueallenstudio.com.
On that site you’ll see lots of her cards and fine art screenprints. There’s also a glimpse of how she designs and prints the layers of her work through a video clip on Oregon Art Beat. In this segment you can see how Sue’s early training as an architect at New York’s Cooper Union shows in her clear, layered forms. You also see the planning and care she takes in producing her screenprints.
On your visit to The Villages you can appreciate Sue’s work on the very home turf that’s inspired her since she came to the mountain in 1981. She’s carried at Made on Mt. Hood and at The Resort’s Riverstone Gift Gallery, as well as many locations in the Portland area.
Come to Sue Allen’s Quarterly Studio Sales
Sue Allen’s quarterly studio sale takes place over Labor Day weekend, September 5, 6 and 7, 2009. Come up and see Sue’s Studio Ink, and find yourself a little paper window on the mountain you can enjoy wherever you are.
