Imagine you and your girlfriends on a weekend condo getaway, with mountain scenery by day and stars by the hundreds at night. Now add to that an outdoor deck with a hot tub, a historic golf course in the back yard and a day spa next door, and you’re ready to be Bruce and Michele Dunn’s guests at Mt. Hood Resort Condos.

The Dunns manage over a dozen of the condos, which range from two to three bedrooms and can easily house 6 to 10 guests; book early if you want one with a hot-tub. When you arrive you’ll find all the comforts of home: a wood burning fireplace, a fully equipped kitchen, and a bathroom for each bedroom stocked with fresh, fluffy towels and rugs. Throw in cable TV, high-speed internet and a washer and dryer, and your get-together won’t miss a beat: catch all your favorite shows, freshen up your travel clothes, and keep in touch with everyone back home (if you dare!). Don’t want to use the kitchen? There are a dozen local restaurants within 2 miles of the condos.

Better yet, the beautiful new spa at The Resort at The Mountain will be your closest neighbor. “It is probably less than 40 steps from the Spa to your front door,” Michele Dunn says. Guests of Mt. Hood Resort Condos get a 20% discount on all services at the Spa, and can stroll back afterward in their slippers to finish up with a long soak in their private outdoor hot tub.

Right now, the chill of winter and early spring makes for a delicious contrast with a hot, gently bubbling tub. If you’re lucky and arrive on a snowy day, you can experience a particular delight of Bruce and Michele’s.

“Our absolute favorite time,” Bruce says, “. . .is when the moon transforms fresh snow into sparkling wonderland! The pristine view of the snow-covered golf course, flocked trees and mountains leaves you with a serene feeling of ‘Ahhh . . . Life is good.’”

Even if all your schedules are booked till the warmer months, the view from the hot tub is worth the trip: The Resort at The Mountain’s 27-hole golf course is quiet and serene and is framed by the pristine Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness Area of the Mt. Hood National Forest. Complete tranquility surrounds you. In fact that’s something Michele Dunn specially notes when asked what she loves best about living in The Villages and running the condos: the peacefulness and low hustle and bustle against a backdrop of awesome views and friendly neighbors.

“You can ski in the a.m.,” says Michele, “golf in the p.m., and hot tub at night – it’s the best of all possible worlds.” It’s easy to see the Dunns have found a cozy slice of paradise they’d like to share. So plan to get yourself and your girls into some hot water soon!

The 44,600 acre Salmon-Huckleberry consists of steep, forested ridges and valleys located 55 miles southeast of Portland and about 15 miles southeast of Sandy.

Created by the 1984 Oregon Wilderness Act this area is the headwaters of the Salmon River, a major contributory to the Sandy River. While few open peaks such as Old Baldy and Huckleberry Mountain offer panoramic vistas, more typical of the Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness is dense forest carpeting steep ridges and canyons, offering a feeling of quiet isolation. In some canyon bottoms, small portions of towering old growth forests remain. Many unusual rock formations, such as prominent cliffs, volcanic dikes, and pinnacles add to the scenery.

Go Appetizer Hopping in the Villages

Step 1: Wrangle Your Gal Pals
Step 2: Pick a Mt Hood Condo or Cabin
Step 3: Take an Appetizer Adventure
Step 4: Catch the Shooting Stars in the Hot Tub

We all need some time to relax and wind down with our friends. And what better way to do that than to visit one of the great restaurants that the Villages at Mt Hood are so well known for? Perhaps it’s a “Ladies Night Out” or “Game Night with the guys”. Nice relaxing get-togethers that include visiting, laughing and catching up, but not necessarily a full and formal meal. The best formula for such an event is typically a cold beverage and an appetizer or two… maybe three.

The restaurants in our Villages are varied in their styles and ambience, and so are their appetizers. The most popular appetizers from the restaurants are included but are really only a part of what one will find on their snack night out in the Villages.

Tenders in Brightwood

The Brightwood Tavern is first up the mountain. Their house favorite appetizer is their Chicken Tenders, most popular due to the portion as well as their great flavor.

Wings are Just the Beginning in Welches

The Barlow Trail Roadhouse is getting a reputation for their Honey Wings. Honey stung chicken wings with honey sauce. Not your traditional chicken wings, most agree that they’re better.
The Whistle Stop and their Deep Fried Mushrooms set apart from the rest mostly due to their own homemade ranch dressing that accompanies them.

The Rendezvous Bar and Grill is another example of world class food offerings and their appetizers are out of this world. Their most popular may be their tender Calamari in light lemon and ginger sauce. You have never tried calamari until you’ve tried it at “The ‘Vous”.

The El Burro Loco offers fine Mexican style food, including their popular Alamo Bowl, which is they’re Chile Verde –a spicy pork simmered in a Blend of tomatillos, Serrano, Poblano and Jalapeno Chiles topped with Cheese, Onions and Lots of Chips.

The Inn Between Steakhouse, known for their cook your own steak, has their own style of Jalapeno Poppers. Non battered, they are handmade and stuffed with cream cheese, garlic and horseradish sauce. They are then wrapped in bacon and deep fried.

The Resort at The Mountain Altitude Restaurant offers a Harvest Mushroom Crostini which is a ragu of wild seasonal mushrooms sautéed with chalets, garlic, rosemary and red wine. They are then sprinkled with Oregon bleu cheese and then topped with a fig molasses, proving that you can indeed enjoy world class cuisine in the Villages at Mt Hood.

Now Mac & Cheese it in Zigzag

The Zigzag Inn is synonymous with pizza and so it goes that they will also be known far and wide for their Garlic Bread Sticks. They use fresh dough and lightly seasoned it before baking. They are served with the Zigzag Inn’s famous marinara sauce.

The Skyway has a dish that, as a side, is the perfect appetizer. Their Mac & Cheese is amazing. Made with a blend of special cheeses and baked with bread crumbs makes this rich and gooey house favorite is actually a meal in itself.

Finish with a Trio in Rhododendron

The Still Creek Inn in Rhododendron has just introduced a great new appetizer menu that includes Bruschetta, Calamari and Shrimp Cocktail. The jury is still out to which will be their most popular.

When you’re all as full as can be, wander back to your lodging and unwind. There is a pretty great shooting star season coming and it will look awesome from a hot tub. There’s really nothing better than spending some quality time with friends – and if the night includes the best darned appetizers on the mountain, well — that’s even better.

As one can see, the Villages at Mt Hood have much to offer for your night out. Appetizers certainly can offer an alternative to a full meal, but as the name implies, they may just do their job and make you want more.

Losing the Winter Hibernation Layer

Winter ran right by and spring has started its race. “Weather” you like it or not, the Varied Thrush is whistling at you, Indian Plum leaves are pushing through their buds, Red Elderberry buds look like they are going to explode, Skunk Cabbage has popped out and there has been a skunk hanging out around my cabin for the last week! Canada Geese are flying up the Zigzag River, and I woke up today listening to a Song Sparrow just going off.

What spring really means is that it is time to lose my winter hibernation layer and start running around! The gym is great but with so many trails and so much beauty, it is time to go outside. Once you step out your door, don’t be alarmed as it is just your shadow ready to bust out into the spring sunlight. Now that you are outside, the next decision is if you are going to take a jog around the neighborhood, out on the road systems, or ducking into the trees on one of the many forest trails. Here are a couple of helpful hints, precautions, and hazards to be aware of so you can have a safe, scenic, and successful run.

When you run, things chase you!

Your two year old will stumble after you, your puppy dog will instinctively chase after your heels, and big cats try to jump on your back. The faster you run (or ride a bike) the more likely you are to surprise those two little black bear cubs and their over protective mother browsing trailside berries. I am not trying to scare anyone, just help pass on that we need to be aware of our surroundings and know what to do WHEN you run into a challenging situation.

Always be aware of your surroundings, tree scratchings, scat (animal poop), carrion, and anything out of the ordinary. It is not only animals that you have to be aware of, it is those ankle biters that jump out of the trail and twist up your ankles. It’s those widow makers or full on branches the size of a small tree that shake loose in breezy conditions. It is your blazing speed and stamina that has taken you too far into the forest that forces you back with the moon. The same reasons we are out there, can come back and bite you right in the …. When you are running on trail, ideally you should take a friend, leave a detailed route and itinerary at home, and let the one you love know your plans. I also recommend taking your ten essentials so you can survive in an emergency situation (or if someone else is in need). It is pretty hard to run around with a 30-pound pack on, but they do make running packs that will hug your body closely and still have enough room for basic items.

Carry the 10 Essentials

Your ten essentials will vary depending on your activity. Mountaineering essentials will differ from your picnic essentials. You may laugh a little, but I believe that everyone should have some if not all of your 10 essentials in your home, car, purse, pack, kayak, horse saddle bags, etc. You just never know!

Running around on the roads brings its own hazards. Dust gets in my eyes after it blows by me. Dust is the least of my worries where as I should feel lucky my toes did not get run over. Sometimes you have to run on Highway 26 to get to other destinations and loops. I find it much more pleasant to run on the smaller roads in our Village neighborhoods, as well as the USFS road systems up Lolo pass, and Salmon River road, Still Creek road, and many others. Most of your running shoes are reflective and I highly recommend wearing reflective clothing at all times during the day. My headlamp also has a flashing red light feature that shows up on the back of my head, and if I am wearing my small running pack, I attach a red flashing light to it.

The one other thing I have to worry about both on trail and the road, is all the ladies chasing after me. For this reason I am forced to carry a small canister of pepper spray! Not for real, I don’t carry pepper spray, and everybody always catches and passes me, and I think bears are cuddly. I do however recommend that people that are nervous or concerned about any sort of attack to purchase and carry pepper spray and know how to use it!

I am more than happy to help customize a trail or road one just for you. My line of work lets me do this for free, so feel free to give me a shout anytime. Below is a little checklist of some recommended trails and roads to enjoy.

Wildwood Park has a number of flat paved and boardwalk trails with interpretive signs for all my breaks!

Still Creek Road is a narrow, one lane paved, turning to gravel road with lots of Thimbleberry for my breaks!

Still Creek Length: An easy-going 4 miles - 3 hours. Open most of the year. Drive Highway 26 to road 32(2632) and continue about 1/2 mile to the trailhead. The trail goes south across a broad ridge in deep timber and gently descends to Still Creek Road 2612.

Lolo Pass is narrow with two lanes with small bike lanes, but I would recommend driving this portion up to the junctions with forest roads 1825 and 1828. This area was highly affected by the volcano leaving it with more wide open, sunshiny, moss-covered terrain with Lodgepole Pine, Douglas Fir, and plenty of deer.Photo courtesy of Steve Hart.

Salmon River road has two lanes but not a lot room on the sides of the road for runners and bikes. Once you have gone about 2.7 miles, you will “run” right into the Old Salmon river trail #742a. Watch your feet on this trail because there is no doubt in my mind that your mind will be wandering! Huge old growth Douglas Firs, Western Red Cedars, the Salmon River, and soon to be wildflowers. I take my breaks while taking photos.

Ramona Falls is a perfect trail run. Not too much elevation gain, great views, a destination point, and a variety of trail conditions. You do cross the Sandy River twice, the same crossing that has had a board going across the last time I was there on 2-22-2010, and completely snow free. Friends have been since and there was a slight dusting of snow. You also have to follow a few cairns once you have crossed the Sandy River.

If you are a little crazy, you can run and train on some of the same trail the Hot Shot forest fire fighters use. Hunchback Mountain trail #793 starts to gain elevation right from the start and is 16 miles round trip to the Devil’s Peak lookout tower. You will still find snow there at this time, but it really won’t be long. Access the trail from the Zigzag Ranger Station parking lot.

There is a community trail on the south side of Highway 26 in Welches that starts at the Barlow Trail Roadhouse and continues down to Welches Mountain Building Supply. Take advantage of getting off the highway and wave to all the businesses along the way. Next time you need to pick up a few items at the grocery store, the hardware store, or just feel like a quick cup of coffee, try running there!

As always, be aware and prepared, take your ten essentials with you, and go work and play outside!

Enjoy every day, Chop

Early Saturday morning, geared up in our snow pants, we headed off to Mount Hood to check out the tubing experience at Skibowl, located on the east side of their Tubing Adventure Park.

Turning left, we headed through Government camp and continued forward, looking for the next sign that would point us in the direction towards our tubing adventure. We crossed over the bridge and could see the fun ahead of us. The hustle and bustle of family and friends surrounded us as we collected our parking pass and tickets to tube!

We grabbed our tubes and enjoyed the view of Timberline to the right hovering above the trees and camp. Eager to race down on our tubes we decided to skip the towrope line and get to the top by walking. Holding our leash we waited patiently. Ready, set, go – we pushed off with our feet and raced down the hill. For the next two hours we continued to enjoy the beautiful day at Skibowl’s Tubing Adventure Park. Soon after we embarked in some refreshments at the snack bar and started our descent home. Next time we’ll have to check out the more adventurous upper tube hill with even steeper runs…

The Shack Attack!

Hunger set in, on our descent. I couldn’t go home without stopping at The Shack restaurant in Welches for a delicious bacon cheeseburger with fries - it is a must after a day on the mountain.

I love The Shack! The prices are perfect and the staff and customers always make me feel at home. A 50” big screen TV above the bar entertained us with The Dew Tour and sports. Kids are welcome in part of the restaurant which includes a game room with pool, pinball and air hockey.

Who Does the Dip, Dip Dive?

The American Dipper

Many birds scour the edge of a stream looking for their next meal.

The American Dipper takes this approach further by diving into the water for his dinner! Like its European counterpart (known as a Water Ouzel), the Dipper bobs its whole body up and down when pausing between dives into fast-moving, rocky streams and shallow lakes.

They have dense gray-brown feathers with a down undercoat. They also have a third eyelid and a larger preen gland at the base of their tail for waterproofing their plumage. Their blood can store more oxygen than other perching birds which allows them to remain underwater for up to 15 seconds.

Each of these adaptations let them dive into chilly waters and walk on the bottom of streams – fully submerged - feeding on insect larvae, periwinkles, eggs and small fish. The Dipper must be watchful though - this clever habit of diving and walking along the bottom of streams in search of food sometimes makes it the prey of larger fish.

They are usually permanent residents in the Mt Hood area, moving slightly south or to lower elevations if necessary to find food during the lean months or unfrozen water. Food is limiting for most of the year, as cold-fast streams are often relatively unproductive to begin with. The presence of this delightful bird indicates good water quality. Decreases in streamside shading, silt from agricultural and logging areas, and the input of fertilizers and toxins from cities and farmfields can reduce the abundance of macroinvertebrates. By keeping our streams clean you can help the American Dipper and many other species to have a healthy habitat in the Villages of Mt Hood.

Their year round song consists of high whistles or trills repeated a few times and their song resounds above the burble of the running streams. Nests are usually located on ledges above a swift-moving stream. Unlike most birds, Dippers will repair and reuse old nests because it is hard for them to find suitable nesting sites.

This surprising little bird will catch your eye – you can’t miss his busy bob, bob, dive action – and it is truly fascinating to watch the Dipper submerge and surface while scouring the rocks and streambeds for his supper.

PLEASE SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES WITH US. Do you have videos or pictures of the American Dipper? Please send your comments and pictures to our BLOG – we would love to see your pictures and hear your stories about these amazing birds.

A Flair for Flowers

Let Sally Embellish Your Special Event — Naturally!

Your wedding cake reflects all the rich goodness of the life you’ll have together. If Sally Schneider is decorating that special centerpiece, you’ll have a work of floral art that not only tastes delicious, but is bursting with the lively, colorful beauty she hopes you’ll always share.

Sally opened Weddings and Other Bloomin’ Occasions” in the Rendezvous Plaza in October 2008, and weddings are her favorite projects. “Weddings are a very happy and exciting time,” she says, “and being a part of that makes me feel that way too.” She also gets to bring her artistic skills and instincts into full play, creating arrangements that distinctively reflect each bride’s individual personality. If the cake is part of the job, often she does not see it until the day of the wedding. Then she designs on the spot, spontaneously assembling flowers that tie into the entire event’s decor.

That same impulse to share through flowers finds Sally creating arrangements for any occasions her customers wish. Whether her art is needed for a birthday, graduation, get well, or just because, she’s ready to custom design a lovely natural gift.

Making Special Arrangements

This past Christmas she created a six-foot-diameter wreath for Timberline’s day lodge, using six varieties of pine cones and two of spruce, all found in Oregon.

Sally insists on using natural or locally grown products in as many as her designs as possible. Living and working on the mountain as she does, she finds no end of materials: twigs, mosses, dried pods and grasses, and native flowers and greenery. This time of year, most flowers must be bought from wholesalers in warmer climates. Sally and her favorite local growers look forward to the warmer seasons, when Oregon-grown blossoms both common and rare will be ready.

As a courtesy to her neighborhood, she delivers her creations free of charge from Brightwood to Rhododendron. She’ll deliver anywhere from Vancouver to Portland, and has transported her wedding arrangements as far as Battle Ground, WA and McMinnville, OR. These are all extensions of home to her, as she’s lived in Oregon her entire life, and on the mountain for the last 13 years, most recently in Marmot.

About Sally

She grew up in the Gresham-Barlow area. Her parents owned a flower nursery specializing in primroses, and as a child she learned the Latin names of many other plants from her grandmother. During her teen years she worked for a Seven Dees field nursery.

Later she spent several years in garden and floral-related corporate departments. Meanwhile she completed college with Art and Journalism majors, married and raised twin sons, went back to school for an Education certification, and worked for the Oregon Trail School District for 11 years. She’s also skilled in many arts, including oil painting, watercolor, professional cake decorating, and custom bridal sewing.

Just before starting her own shop, she worked for a local florist for two years. When the shop she was working in went out of business she started her own, first out of her home for five years, then sharing space till the current shop in the Rendezvous became available. All these gifts and energy are for Sally a means to give back to her beloved community and to people who call on her talents. “It is so wonderful,” she says, “to be immersed in the beauty of flowers every day and to know that what I do also blesses others. I’ve found that this is my mission in life. This is my way of serving others by always doing my best regarding quality, price, and attitude. I am finally living my dream!”

Tips for Choosing the Perfect Cabin for
Ski Groups and Getaways in the Villages of Mt Hood

Staying in a cabin in the woods can be a great way to spend a family vacation, romantic rendezvous or relaxing getaway. Mount Hood cabins are often surrounded by captivating natural views such as forested areas or streams which brings the mountain’s natural beauty right to your doorstep.

From casually rustic to very elegant, Mt. Hood cabins are a worth experiencing. For preliminary research, you can call Mt. Hood Information Center, 503-622-3017 or browse the websites listed below.

Mt. Hood is more and more well-known for its diverse lodging cabins. They are available in a variety of styles, with many different amenities and settings. To find a perfect fit for your needs, take a few moments to consider these questions.

What is your Favorite Location?

Would you like a cabin near a river, golf course, skiing or shopping? Would you like a room with a view? Should your cabin be secluded or would you prefer to be in a mountain neighborhood?

How close is the cabin to activities and recreation, hiking, golf, fishing, restaurants, shops, etc?

You might want to ask about whether the cabin is located a gravel road or ask if there will be sidewalks or street lights.

How Flexible is Your Timeline & Budget?

If possible, you might want to jot down alternate dates before calling in your reservations. Also, keep a budget range to keep in mind as you learn a property’s location, furnishing, amenities, etc.

How Private are the Cabin Accommodations?

Is the cabin a stand-alone home or will you share walls with other guests? How many bedrooms will you need and what type of sleeping arrangements do you prefer? Check to see if the cabin is equipped with real beds and of what size. This will help clarify which are sofa beds, futons or cots. Some cabins have plenty of bunkbeds which are perfect for large groups. Be sure to ask if the bedrooms have doors and walls for privacy and if there are lofts and sleeping areas.

Are linens provided for bed, bath and kitchen? Do they have maid services available if requested during a stay?

Is There a Wood Burning Fireplace?

How will you heat your cabin? If you hear “fireplace” or “woodstove,” ask if there is also a furnace or other heating source. If there is a fireplace or woodstove, can you burn real firewood or just duraflame type of logs? Is the firewood provided?

How Much Kitchen Do You Need?

Does the cabin have a full kitchen that will suit your needs (insure it matches what you mean by “full” kitchen)? Or will you prefer a kitchenette? Be sure to ask about pots, pans and utensils. Will you need a dishwasher?

Can Fido Come Along?

Is the home pet-friendly (just dogs or all types of critters)? Or is it truly pet-free for those with allergies?

Hot Tubs & Other Concerns

If there is a hot tub, is it secluded, outdoors, shared with other people or is a jetted bathtub inside? How frequently is it maintained?

What about smoking versus non-smoking? Is it handicap accessible throughout? Do you need a covered parking area or structure? Do you need cancellation insurance or travel-related insurance? Can the host provide concierge services, if needed?

If you still have questions about the quality of furnishing, beds or cabin cleanliness after calling or researching online, cabin hosts can address these issues with you by phone or you can always arrange for a tour of the cabin prior to booking your reservation.

Please note that renting a cabin usually requires signing an agreement with the cabin’s management person or group. You can usually read their agreement terms online so you can be prepared to get answers to any questions you may have about their agreement.

Hint: You may want to print this list out for future reference. There are many who discover cabin stays become their first choice for lodging needs. For more lodging in the Villages of Mt Hood, visit our Lodging section in this issue.
