Snowshoe Mt Hood

Where to Snowshoe & Cross-Country

In and Around the Villages of Mt Hood

Mount Hood has miles and miles of snowshoe opportunities - and a huge reputation for trails that deliver stunning views along the way as your reward!

A popular spot is Zigzag District Old Maid Flats. Lolo Pass Road and Old Maid Flats are easy and quick to reach.  Call the Zigzag Ranger Station or check online for conditions.  There are no fees charged in this vicinity during the winter, but that means there are no services provided either, so roads and parking lots will not be plowed, making for a less-crowded adventure in the snow (please do not park in private driveways).  Directions: Take Hwy 26 up to the Zig Zag Inn.  The turn for Lolo Pass Road is across from the Inn and the Ranger Station.  Drive north 4 or 5 miles until you see the Forest Service sign marking the entrance to the Mt. Hood Forest, turn right, following signs to Ramona Falls and Road 1825.  Park along the road, taking care to not block access by other vehicles.  Continue up the road for about half a mile to a gated bridge.  Start cross-country skiing or snowshoeing just inside the gate or continue up Last Chance Road.  There are several out and back options up to 10-12 miles distance inside the gate. Pet Friendly Lodging

Pets are Family Too!

Pet-Friendly Lodging in the Villages of Mt Hood

Mt. Hood’s pristine beauty and endless outdoor activities make it a prime destination for vacationers (and pets).

With so many outdoor adventures to enjoy, such as hiking, sightseeing and fishing, you may want to bring your pets and enjoy a longer stay. Fortunately, a wide variety of lodging properties in the area welcome your furry friends.

When exploring your lodging options, it is important to be aware of the pet policies that vary between hotels, vacation rental companies, and other lodging properties. Most charge either a fee or deposit when checking in, but it’s a small price to pay to have your pets enjoy the great outdoors with you. One common policy is how many pets you may bring, and occasionally there are restrictions on the type of pet. Often, hotels and cabins have designated pet areas as well as specified locations where animals are not allowed. (more…)

Give a Unique Mount Hood Coverlet

A Keepsake Gift for the Benefit of Hoodland Senior Center

When you come to the Villages of Mt Hood keep an eye out for the limited edition coverlets that the local gift shops are selling. The design is based on Sue Allen’s original screenprint series “Around Mt. Hood: 12 Months – 12 Directions” which depicts the sides and seasons of Mt Hood.

This collectible coverlet is a the kind of present that is fun to give and a joy to receive. You can find them at Whispering WoodsMade on Mt. HoodIn Sheep’s Clothing,Wy’east Book Shoppe & Art Gallery and Hoodland Senior Center for $65. They are 100% cotton and their size is 51 x 57” plus fringe.

mt hood artistsProceeds from the sale of these beautiful coverlets benefit Hoodland Senior Center. “I was asked to be the artist for the 2009 coverlet, and I suggested they use all 12 images from my screenprint series (they had thought maybe one). I donated use of my images to the Senior Center, they had it prototyped and 100 were finally woven” says Sue.

The original screenprint series began in 2006 when Sue Allen was awarded a grant from the Clackamas County Cultural Coalition and the Oregon Cultural Trust, for her screenprint design project - “Around Mt. Hood: 12 Months - 12 Directions.”

The series of 12 original limited-edition screenprints depicts views of the mountain from different directions in different months. Sue gathered ideas and information for her project by taking scenic drives, hikes in the national forest, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing; often bringing friends along on her Mt Hood research adventure.

The coverlets are also available by contacting Sue Allen at 503-522-3611.

A Home Away From Home

Doublegate Inn Bed & Breakfast in the Villages of Mt Hood

Photograph

Lewis and Clark are alive and well and ready to welcome you to Welches.  You’ll want to look down, since they are very short.  Lewis and Clark are black and white Japanese spaniels, 9 inches tall, and they help Stephanie and Eric Kaster run the Doublegate Inn.

The Kasters bought the house in 2007 after spotting it on a visit to family in the area. They had been there three days when an elderly gentleman knocked on their door and stayed for four and a half hours.  His name was “Sunny Jim” Anderson, and his parents had built

the house in the years 1919-21.  Members of the Bowman family, who had also earlier owned the house, helped to provide the warm sense of community Eric and Stephanie found (more…)

Where the Friendly Is

How the Villages Became Known for Hospitality

Hospitality is the watch word here on The Mountain. Our communities, collectively, are called The Villages of Mt Hood, but the locals call it “The Mountain”.

First Came the Cabins

Hospitality has a long tradition here starting back in late 19th century when Oregon Trail pioneer Samuel Welch and his son William “Billy” Welch transitioned the Welch’s Ranch into a camping, hunting, fishing and hiking destination. Folks from Portland and the Willamette Valley had discovered the (more…)

Mt Hood Morels…

Those most elusive mushrooms hardly a soul shares the whereabouts thereof.

No wonder people in the ‘know’ are nervous when asked where they got those yummy Morels.

wild morel hunting

First… They can’t be found except by luck or accident.

Second… Some Morels will grow in the same place for many years — and if you happen to find one of these places it should be treated like a gold strike to keep secret.

And Third… You need something to pass on to your favorite heir.

Every year the season for Morel mushrooms is different. Changing mainly with the moisture in the ground, big storm fronts with lightning, sudden freezes at the wrong time or landscape changes such as logging or (more…)
